The Open Door

[posted by Callimachus]

Carol Platt Liebau, a self-described "proud conservative," lays out the five-point appeal of Barack Obama (with whom she worked briefly at Harvard Law Review).

  • He has a mix of "intellectual credentials that would impress even the snootiest resume snob" and "street smarts"

  • He's colorblind

  • He's self-confident

  • He listens; "unlike many of his left-wing compatriots, he treated his ideological adversaries with respect on a personal level"

  • He has a sense of humor.

It takes no reck of political ideology. It is based on impressions, personality, feelings -- things many conservatives are highly susceptible to, even as they decry liberals for being ruled by them. And this all might turn out to be crucially important in 18 months or so.
