Nothing is more difficult than everyday speech. No sentence of Joyce or Einstein could be more perplexing, to a non-native speaker, than someone saying:

"It didn't used to have to be that way."

Imagine someone armed only with the common definitions of "do," "use," "have," and "way" trying to decipher that.
