Fail Safe


Let's challenge both presidential nominees to place the problem of reducing the risk of accidental nuclear war on their agendas. Because while "the odds are low," the costs of a catastrophe would be unimaginably high.

Sounds like something written in 1960, doesn't it? A Cold War nightmare, the kind of thing I was so glad to let go of in 1989 that it felt like waking from a nightmare. It's not. It's current events. May the receeding chill not turn out to be an Indian summer.
