My Predictions
Stank. Florida fooled me completely (and a lot of other people, too, I guess). I figured Kerry would pry away at least one Hispanic-minority state in the Rocky Mountains, and that Bush would do better in the upper Midwest.
At one point last night it looked like there was a chance it could go to a virtual tie, with Hawaii the last state reporting. I was imagining the temptation of Hawaiian officials to say, "woah, we need time to count all these ballots, and by the way, what have you got in the bag for us, Mr. Bush, Mr. Kerry? A suspension bridge to California, perhaps? Shall we re-negotiate that annexation?"
Newsroom comments: "Four more years of hell." And, when the headline "Bush takes lead" was suggested, many people hopefully read the third word as "lead" the metal.
Kerry did a wonderful thing this morning, for his country. The best moments of his campaign were the last.
This morning, looking at all the pictures on the wire, the one person who looks truly happy is Teresa Heinz Kerry. I'm genuinely happy for her, too; being First Lady in America would have been perfect hell for her. I doubt she could have endured it without a nervous breakdown. Nobody deserves that.
Words of advice to Bush: Use the Power of the Lame Duck wisely, to force a workable peace plan for Israel and the Palestinians. Consider the excellent tradition of recent Democrats in having at least one person from the other party in a key cabinet position.
