What Iraqis Want

Via Omar comes news of an Iraqi opinion poll by Al Sabaah (Arabic only) that asked what the new Iraq goivernment's first task should be. The top answer was providing security (55.16%). The percentage for "getting the foreign troops out," by contrast, was 4.97%, and the votes for "applying Sharia law" amounted to only 1.01%.

No way to tell from here how scientific that polling was. Omar seems to think it's not out of line.

Meanwhile, another of the brave Iraqi bloggers, Alaa, had a close call.

Not to alarm my faithful friends, it has nothing to do with anything personal, although one of these car bombs, resulted in breaking everything made of glass in my own house, and the horror of finding a human brain on our roof. Luckily, and I thank the merciful God, no one was hurt, quite miraculously.

No one except the suicide bomber, of course. Alaa, without making reference to the Al Sabaah poll, seems to be of the same opinions.

I can affirm, definitely that most people there are longing for the day when they can get out of this nightmare. ... Until the central government is strong enough to send forces to fully control areas such as the Western Anbar, and even parts of Baghdad and elsewhere, there will be no real peace. Let us hope that the soon to be formed government will have sufficient backbone to accomplish what is required.
