Dark Chocolate

Chocolate is the new cotton? Believe it.

lawmakers said Monday in admonishing the chocolate industry for its pace in monitoring labor practices on West African cocoa farms.

"If we can have our tuna fish dolphin-free, we can have our chocolate slave-free," Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., said at a news conference where he pledged to abstain from chocolate and refrain from buying Valentine's Day chocolate for his wife and daughter.

It's not surprising when you realize that the belt of tropical nations where cocoa is grown includes some of the most repressive economies on earth.

So where's the outrage? Where are the pickets? Where's Russell Simmons?

Hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons has joined other celebrities and activists who have criticized Kentucky Fried Chicken, saying he will call for a boycott if the company doesn't reform its slaughter practices.

Will Michael Moore give up chocolate? Will Barbra Streisand?
